Bright Redfish or Nannygai are a slow growing demersal species that generally inhabit deep offshore waters of Southern Australia. They can be caught as far north as Jurien Bay but are more common from Albany across to South Australian, Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales often in 100-500m of water.
Easily distinguished from a similar species the Red Snapper as Nannygai have 7 dorsal spines and red coloured eyes whereas the former has 6 dorsal spines and yellow colouration in their eyes. Nannygai display a deep orange-red colouration had posses razor sharp gill plates and scales.
Nannygai has a delicate flesh with an irresistible mild sweet flavour.
